The theme for this year's contest is 'The River'

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of RC Sherriff and the anniversary of the publication of Three Men in a Boat, this year's theme is 'The River'.

The Elmbridge Literary Competition invites national and international entries in three age categories: 5-7, 8-11, 11-13, 14-18 and adult. Enter poems up to 30 lines and stories up to 1,500 words (by writers aged 14 to adult). All entries must be on the theme of 'The River'.

In each the adult category the prizes are £250, £150 and £100. The Elmbridge Award of a £50 book token will be given for the best entry by an Elmbridge resident.

Entry is free in the young writers' categories, and £8 per entry for adults.

The closing date is 21 February.
