Win a £10,000 book deal with Canongate in the competition for underrepresented nature writers

The biennial Nan Shepherd Prize, named in honour of the author of The Living Mountain, was set up in 2019 to celebrate nature writing and provide an inclusive platform for new and emerging nature writers from underrepresented backgrounds.

The winner's prize of a Canongate book deal with a £10,000 advance also includes editorial mentoring.

The competition is for writers from the UK and Ireland who have not published a full-length work of fiction or non-fiction with a trade publisher.

To enter, submit a one-page synopsis of a narrative non-fiction book that in some way engages with nature or the environement plus chapter outlines, and a 7,000-word sample. Manuscripts do not need to be completed before submission. Also include a biographical note no longer than 500 words that explains why you feel underrepresented and nature writing and details of relevant writing experience.

Entry is free.
