The competition is for proposals for book-length essays (minimum 25,000 words) by unpublished writers in the UK and Ireland.

The winner will receive £3,000 as an advance against publication by Fitzcarraldo Editions. The winner will also have the opportunity to spend up to two months in residency at the Mahler & Lewitt Studios in Spoleto. Italy. This year's prize will be judged by a committee comprised of Joanna Briggs, Brian Dillon, Joanna Kavenna, Max Porter and Jacques Testard.

Submit a proposal up to 5,000 words outlining the subject matter, scope, style and structure of the proposed essay. A writing sample up to 5,000 words may also be included.

Entry is free.

The closing date is 17 March.
