The winning author of the contest for single short stories will receive £15,000
The BBC National Short Story Award with Cambridge University is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2025. It invites entries of short stories up to 8,000 words. Writers entering the competition must have a record of prior publication in creative writing in the UK.
The first prize is £15,000 and four further shortlised writers will each win £600. The five winning stories will be published in an anthology published by Comma Press and also broadcast on Radio 4 and available to listen to on BBC Sounds. This year's chair of judges is Di Spiers and the returning judges in the 20th anniversary year are William Boyd, Lucy Caldwell, Ross Raisin and Kamila Shamsie.
Each author may enter one story. Stories may be entered by authors or their publisher or agent on their behalf. All entries must be either original and either unpublished, or scheduled for publication after January 2024.
Entry is free.
The closing date is 17 March.
