Six writers have been shortlisted for the Costa's inaugural short fiction award, which has a first prize of £3,500

The prize is for a single short story of up to 4,000 words.

The shortlist is:

• Guy le Jeune, Small Town Removal

• Avril Joy, Millie and Bird

• Sheila Llewellyn, Dislocation

• Chioma Okereke, Trompette de la Mort

• Angela Readman, Don't Try This at Home

• Salley Vickers, Mown Grass

The stories were selected by a panel of judges, and then put to a public vote, which has now closed. The winner will be announced at the Costa awards ceremony on 29 January.
