The overall winner will be the writer whose story has received the most public votes

The Costa Short Story Award is open to any writer and is judged anonymously. The identities of the three shortlisted authors in this year's award have been revealed today. They are:

• Billy O'Callaghan for The Boatman

• Rob Ewing for The Persistence of Memory

• Jess Kidd for Dirty Little Fishes

All three finalists are also debut novelists. The author whose story has received the most public votes will win £3,500. The second and third place runners up will win £1,000 and £500. The Costa Short Story Award prizes will be presented at the Costa Book Awards ceremony on 31 January.
