The storytelling competition for children was launched on BBC2 Radio Breakfast Show this morning
Host Chris invites writers aged 13 and under to send in their story. There are two categories: age 9 and under, and age 10 to 13. Last year's competition attracted more than 90,000 entries.
Chris Evans said: '500 WORDS provides a glimpse into the brilliant minds of kids around the country. These stories will amuse, thrill, delight and inspire you. So please: spread the word about 500 WORDS. And if you’re aged 13 and under, get writing!”
There are bronze, silver and gold prizes in each category. The top 50 story-writers will be invited to the Hay Festival for a live broadcast on 30 May, when the winners will be announced.
All entries to 500 WORDS must be fictional stories.
The closing date is 28 February.
