We Need Diverse Books is a grassroots organisation created to address the lack of non-majority narratives in children's literature.
The planned anthology, which has a working title of Stories for All of Us, is in memory of American children's author Walter Dean Myers and is inspired by his quote: 'Once I began to read, I began to exist.' One slot in the anthology has been reserved for a previously unpublished diverse author, and the competition is to find this story.
There is a first prize of $1,000 and publication. Two runners-up will each receive $250.
The competition, for stories for children aged 8-12 up to 5,000 words, may be entered by writers of any diverse background who have not been published in a traditional print book format.
The closing date is 8 May.
