To celebrate National Libraries' Day tomorrow, PLR has released its annual data on the most borrowed authors and books from UK libraries, including the information above. Other interesting book-borrowing factoids about 2014/15 are:
• James Patterson, this year's most borrowed author, has remained the number-one most borrowed writer since 2006/7.
• Of the top ten most borrowed titles, nine were crime or thrillers, with Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid sneaking in at tenth.
• Jacqueline Wilson is the most-borrowed children's author over the last 20 years. Her books have been borrowed more than 25 million times since 1995.
• The single most-borrowed title was Personal by Lee Child. Never Go Back, also by Lee Child, is in second place. Lee Child is the ninth most borrowed author overall.
• Julia Donaldson is the second most borrowed author, with Daisy Meadows and Francesca Simon in third and fourth place.
• The most-borowed audiobook was Without a Trace by Lesley Pearse, read by Emma Powell.
• Crime writer MC Beaton continues her six-year run of being the most-borrowed British author of books for adults.
• During Februrary, PLR will make payments totalling £6 million to 22,347 writers, illustrators, photographers, editors, translators adaptors, narrators, producers and abridgers.
• The rate per loan for 2016 is 7.67 pence.
