The scheme, which was implemented by ARL's Kristi Rodriguez, sees children in school grades 1-8 reading aloud to cats in the adoption room. The ARL says cats are soothed and comforted by the rhythmic sound of reading aloud.
Book Buddies was inspired by Kristi's own 10-year-old son, Sean, who struggled with reading but loved reading to the cats at the shelter so much that he asked to go back and do it again. Since Book Buddies began in August last year, Sean's reading has improved and he now reads to his dogs at home.
