Coffee break exercise: Something strange

05390169-b9ad-4943-a489-5f2b84ad05cd

Create new work out of an inexplicable happening in this week's creative writing exercise

Has something strange ever happened to you? Something that can't be explained by logic, or that seems irrational?

For three minutes, jot down details of what you remember about the incident.

For another two minutes, make notes about how it made you feel.

Now imagine how you might integrate that incident into a piece of creative writing and make sense of it to a reader. Start with the words 'I don't expect you to believe this' and write for ten minutes.

Once you've completed this exercise, why not have a look at the effect of a metaphor on your readers and then go back to your writing and look at the metaphors you've used?
