Coffee break exercise: Nursery rhyme

75919593-e4c8-4df6-a00f-6f26a13581ac

This week's creative writing exercise is about reworking childhood classics to create a new piece of work

Think of a favourite nursery rhyme from your childhood, such as Humpty Dumpty, Old King Cole, Jack and Jill, Hickory Dickory Dock or Baa Baa Black Sheep. Jot it down so you've got it in front of you.

Now rewrite it for adult or young adult readers as one of the following:

• A crime story

• A news report

• Historical fiction

• A monologue

• A comedy script

• A modern romance

Write for ten minutes. Have fun!

Keep the  fun going by doing this quiz to see which genre you should be writing!
