Writers often have issues with the 'soggy middles' of their manuscripts - so that's the focus of this week's creative writing exercise

For this week's coffee-break writing exercise, you get the first line of a story, and the last one. What happens in between is up to you.

Here's your first line: The rain had poured down in torrents and Mia had been late for everything.

Here's your last line: All that was left was a chocolate wrapper on the kitchen floor.

For five minutes, write down your ideas of what might happen between line one and line two, and how the two lines could be made to make sense in the context of a story.

For the next ten minutes, write as much as you can of a 500-word flash fiction beginning and ending with the given lines.
