Imagine opening the post and finding something unexpected to inspire new writing in this week's exercise

For a few moments, imagine that you or a character receive a parcel in the post that you weren't expecting. Make some notes about what this might be and whether it would be a wonderful surprise, or a terrible one.

Spend a couple of minutes outlining a story or piece of creative non-fiction that begins with receiving a letter or packet containing something that comes as a complete surprise. What actions might the arrival of this thing prompt? What might the back story be?

Start writing an opening scene where the packet is opened and the surprise item revealed. Concentrate on conveying how the recipient feels, and set the seeds for a storyline that begins with the scene you're writing.
