Take interest from your spare-time activities in this week's creative writing exercise
What do you like to do at home in your spare time? Gardening? Cooking? Crafting? Family history research? Or, of course, writing?
Whatever it is, imagine a character (they may be based on you but don't have to be) and give them your hobby, pastime or interest. The twist, though, is that your character is a beginner. For five minutes, make notes about what draws your character to this pastime, and what they're hoping it will bring them.
For ten minutes, write a first-person account, in your character's voice, that expresses their growing interest and how it might enrich their life.
If you're interested in family history check out Family Tree magazine and start the fascinating task of finding out about your ancestors.
