Decide what makes someone happy in this week’s creative writing exercise

Choose one of your characters, or create a new one, and then write a list or passage including everything you can think of that makes them happy. Include lighthearted things as well as the really important things. Nothing is too big or too small!

This exercise could be used to create a more rounded perspective on a main character, but it could also be very useful in creating a villain. Even the most villainous person is multi-dimensional and has things that make them happy, and ‘playing with their children’ and ‘a nice cup of tea’ may well be two of them. Showing your characters have layers makes them more absorbing for the reader - so dive in, and think what makes your monster happy!
