Adam Mars-Jones wins the inaugural Hatchet Job of the Year Award

08 February 2012

Adam Mars-Jones wins the inaugural Hatchet Job of the Year Award The prize was for his Observer review of Michael Cunningham's novel By Nightfall

The Hatchet Job of the Year Award was set up by online critical digest The Omnivore with the aim of celebrating newspaper book reviews, and to reward the writer of the 'angriest, funniest, most trenchant book review of the last twelve months.'

Adam's review of By Nightfall, published on 23 January 2011, begins: 'Nothing makes a novel seem more vulnerable, more naked, than an armour-plating of literary references. If you're constantly referring to landmarks, it doesn't make you look as if you're striding confidently forward – it makes you look lost.'

Adam's prize is a year's supply of potted shrimp from The Fish Company.
